As per the 2001 Census there were 85.77 lakh tribals in Maharashtra, which is 8.85% of the total population of Maharashtra. Bhill, Gond, Gavit, Kolam, Kokru, Warli, Kokna, Andh, Malhar, koli, Thakur and Katkaris are the predominant tribes in Maharashtra which constitute 80% of the total tribal population.17 Maharashtra is one of the four states, which has the largest number of tribal population. According to the 2001 Census, the literacy in Maharashtra was 76.90% whereas the literacy among the tribals was just 45.05%. All the tribal communities in Maharashtra are economically impoverished. The main source of their livelihood is agriculture. Forty percent of the tribals cultivate land, whereas 45% of them work as agricultural laborers. Besides agriculture, another major source of their livelihood is forest products. Tribals in Maharashtra can be geographically divided into 3 areas namely, Sahyadri region, Satpuda region and Gondvan region. As per 2001 census tribal population of the Raigad district is 12.2%, which falls under the sahyadri region.
